Dec 2025: Joshua Masters

Each month, new and aspiring artists have 1 week to complete TFP SHOP’s back wall.

Joshua Masters (b. 1998, San Jose, CA) was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. Joshua graduated with their BFA in studio art at Western Carolina University in 2024 and is currently pursuing an MFA in Art at Florida State University.

They began as a freelance artist in 2015 and continued their career through mural work before transitioning to work as an intern and glassblowing assistant at the Jackson County Green Energy Park while working towards their undergraduate degree. Their works have been shown in The Dark Side at the Boomer Gallery, London, UK, ArtFields at the Jones-Carter Gallery in Lake City, SC, the 14th Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition 2023 at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, CT, and Pride Pots: Community Conversations at the Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA. Joshua’s artistic practice is based in sociological and archival research of personal heritage and disabled-queer communities. Their interdisciplinary focus currently involves ceramics, painting, collage and installation as they approach contemporary issues through the lens of social research, family systems, and queer theory.

We are proud to announce Joshua Masters as the winner of this month’s TFP Monthly Mural contest. Masters’ mural, part of their Harmony series, brings warmth, playfulness, and heartfelt storytelling to the back wall of the Fuzzy Pineapple, located at 1205 S Adams St, Tallahassee, Florida 32301, USA, transforming the space into a vibrant celebration of connection and community.

Completed within one week, the mural spans an 11 x 24 ft exterior wall and depicts a lush, forested landscape inspired by North Florida. The scene features figures dancing and celebrating together, reflecting the joy Masters has found in both nature and chosen family. The poses are drawn from engagement and wedding photographs of close friends, lending the work a sense of intimacy and sentimentality while maintaining a playful tone.

Masters' Mural Submission

As with other works in the Harmony series, each figure is intentionally anonymized through the cheeky addition of a pineapple in place of a face, a thoughtful nod to the Fuzzy Pineapple building itself. This visual choice reinforces themes of unity, belonging, and shared joy.

Much of the mural was created during early morning and evening hours, often in low-light conditions, requiring careful planning and adaptability throughout the process. While the piece came together quickly, documenting its creation was limited. Working in an active public space meant prioritizing presence, focus, and personal safety over setting up extended time-lapse equipment. Despite these challenges, the finished mural stands as a complete reflection of the intention and care behind the work.

The TFP Monthly Mural selection committee was especially impressed by the mural’s strong narrative, thoughtful symbolism, and efficient execution. Completing a mural of this scale in just one week,  and largely outside of full daylight hours, speaks to Masters’ preparation, skill, and dedication to their practice.

This mural will remain on view for one month, continuing to enliven the space and invite the public into a moment of celebration and connection.
